Huelskamp Continues to Strongly Support NBAF
(DODGE CITY, KAN.) – Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives considered and ultimately passed the FY13 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill. During the floor debate, Kansas Congressman Tim Huelskamp spoke in support of the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) to be constructed in Manhattan, Kansas. Funding for the facility is contained within the DHS Appropriations measure. After the vote, Congressman Huelskamp issued the following statement explaining why he ultimately opposed the appropriations measure:
"Since my time in the Kansas State Senate, I have been supportive of NBAF and efforts to make the project happen at Kansas State University," Congressman Huelskamp said. "Beginning with my votes for the project in 2008 in the Kansas Senate and continuing with my support of the project at the federal level, I have consistently backed both construction and research efforts in Manhattan. When the DHS Appropriations bill came to the floor last week, I joined others in the Kansas House delegation in speaking and voting against numerous Democrat defunding amendments that would create further delays for the NBAF project. Fortunately, none of those amendments was adopted. However, because of the inclusion of $5 billion in unpaid-for disaster funding, I did vote against the entire $45 billion appropriations bill."
"When I visited the NBAF construction site this past February, I affirmed the need for the federal government to move forward with this project. After all, every day that goes by without it is one more day that our country and our food supply are vulnerable to attack. Along with the rest of the Kansas delegation, I will continue to advocate for the construction and ultimate operation of NBAF."
